We have heard from many specialists across the Southeastern US, including Dr. Rachel Vann here at NCSU, that the way to increase soybean yields is to plant earlier and choose an earlier maturing variety. So to put this to the test here in Warren County, Ag Agent Matthew Place and Area Agent Scott Tilley planted a on-farm research plot on the farm of Jeremy Paschall on April 22nd, 2021. In the test, four replications were made, in which consisted of the following relative maturity groups: 3.7, 3.9, 4.2, and 5.9. The plot was treated and cared for just like the rest of the soybeans raised by Paschall. When the plot was harvested, the earlier maturing varieties averaged close to the same amount of bushels per acre (bpa), which was between 69-72 bpa. The later maturing variety, 5.9, yielded 58 bpa. While the early beans had the larger yield, they had 5-10% more seed damage and purple seed stain as compared to the later maturity group. This was still a small percentage of the beans that were damaged, so the potential to have higher yields successfully from early maturity group beans here in Warren County is still a viable option for farmers.
